I’ve Just Found An Older Interview …
LA has a style all its own. How does that come across in your clothing line? What about LA is inspiring?
Los Angeles is a fashion forward city that combines bold colors, comfort, and Hollywood glamour to form its own unique style. To exemplify how Los Angeles inspires us in our designs take a look at our Spring 2011 Collection and where our inspiration was derived from. For Spring 2011 we wanted to convey a “California Cool” vibe and incorporate all the pastel colors and elements and the overall “breezy” feel of Venice beach, which is such a landmark of the California Coast. We wanted to stay true to our sexy and empowering fits but incorporate the ease of the true California “Beach Bum”. Think of the following images when considering our inspiration: Malibu Barbie, Sweet Valley High, Venice Beach, Abbott Kinney Road, California Blue, crashing waves, marine mist in the morning, pale sand at your toes, the carnival at Santa Monica pier, all these images led to the creation of the Spring 2011 Collection.
How did you come up with the name Naven? Tell me more about your European influences.
My family is Irish from a small city called Navan. Because family and upbringing is so important in our lives the name for our brand was very much inspired by Navan. My sister and I spent summers in London, Paris, Saint Tropez and Cannes travelling to Cities with my family and vacationing in summer homes. Being able to experience European culture consistently throughout our lives has very much shaped our sense of style.
I noticed you both attended FIDM in LA. What did fashion school teach you that you could not learn on your own?
We actually did not both attended FIDM we attended different Universities I have describes the brief history below.
Naven was founded in 2007 by identical twin designers, Kym and Alexis. After graduating from FIDM in Los Angeles, Kym obtained a BA in fashion design while interning at various Los Angeles fashion houses. Alexis graduated from Pepperdine University with majors in French and Marketing with an emphasis on Business before interning at a Los Angeles fashion houses and gaining marketing and administrative experience in various businesses. Alexis brings a business and marketing skills to NAVEN and Kym brings her creative talent and together their focused is on building NAVEN into a major fashion company.
Who’s celebrity style is most like your own?
Katy Perry (for going out outfits), Blake Lively (all around style), Anne Hathaway (for event gowns)
What is your essential going out for drinks in LA outfit?
Naven’s Party Dress in Pop Pink with studded shoulders, stiletto Black ankle boots, a fitted leather jacket and matching clutch, my hair tied back in a tight “vintage vogue” style bun, black thick eyeliner and red lips.
What is your go to daytime outfit for shopping and lunch with friends?
A Naven Kimono top with pocket in Peach paired with a Naven Skinny mini Petal Skirt (as seen on Giuliana Rancic on E! News)in Black, Tan studded stilettos with matching studded shoulder purse and a cream Naven Blazer with the sleeves slightly rolled. For a day time look I would wear my hair down in loose waves with peach lips and soft natural eyes.
What is the essential fashion accessory that everyone in LA needs?
an oversized ring
If you could offer one piece of fashion advice to our readers what would it be?
Know how to dress for your body type, and always incorporate color into your outfit- why blend in with the crowd instead stand out with bold colors.
When not designing, you can be found doing what….?
Being active and outdoors is a must, you can find us during the summer at Venice beach biking the board walk or snowboarding in the winters at Mammoth Mountain. We love the cinema (we adore super hero and comic book movie remakes), dinners out with friends and going to watch our favorite bands such as Miike Snow at the local theatres.
Where are your favorite places to shop and dine in LA?
Robetson Blvd and Beverly Blvd and two of LA’s hot spots for shopping where you can find all the good shops such as; Kitson, Intermix, and Divine. Great restaurants can be found in the same neighborhood such as Cecconi’s, The little Door, or Izaka-ya which is the best sushi in town.
Once again..how A M A Z I N G are they?!

Re-edited version of NAVEN’s interview!

If you’ve ever flicked through the pages of Life & Style or caught up with some of your favorite stars on E!, chances are you’ve already spied at least one NAVEN creation on the red carpet. Twin designers Kym and Alexis McClay know just what girls crave – fun, flirty and figure-flattering pieces in bold, look-at-me hues. Khloe & Kim Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari and Kendra Wilkinson are among the starlets that have been snapped sporting their aptly named ‘Bombshell’ and ‘Party’ dresses, earning the McClay sisters their enviable title of queens of Young Hollywood style - Ashley Schuweiler
Q: Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
NAVEN Girls: Our inspiration comes from everyday life, for example; a color scheme for a printed blouse could come from the colors in a flower, the angular structure of a dress, from city architecture, the theme of a collection from an Old Hollywood movie. We take those tangible inspirations and create our “Dream Closet” each season to the next.
Q: Is there any celebrity you would love to see wear your designs?
NAVEN Girls: We would love to see Katy Perry and Kate Bosworth in NAVEN. Katy represents freedom and playfulness that we incorporate in Naven clothing through Color and mini cuts, and Kate represents poise and classicism, which we portray in creating a unique take on classic silhouettes.

Q: As twins do you think you have similar fashion styles?
NAVEN Girls: We tend to take polarized view on fashion. Kym loves to be edgy and push the fashion boundary, where as Alexis likes to stay true to a sophisticated and classic look.

Q: You have captured the “Young Hollywood” vibe such as Khloe Kardashian and the E News Girls: what was it like seeing your designs on celebrities?
NAVEN Girls: PR is a huge division with Naven. Our sales are directly influence by young Hollywood wearing our clothing. We work with a great PR Firm BGPR who works on a day to day basis, ensuring the proper management of our image and of our press. Knowing our PR efforts are paying off, and on a personal level, being recognized by our peers is the biggest compliment of all. The compliment that always warms our hearts and kicks it up a notch to the “warm fuzzys” is when a girl says “I’m a huge NAVEN fan”. When you put your sweat and tears into a product tailored specifically for a fashion forward customer, and the girl loves it! It gets us every time.
Q: When did you feel that you ‘made it’ as designers?
NAVEN Girls: Our first order with Neiman Marcus was the moment that we truly felt like accomplished designers. Moving from an emerging company to an established brand, distributed through majors like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom’s, is a phase in our career that signifies a huge advancement for Naven as a respectable fashion house.

Q: Since you are based in LA, how would describe the style of LA girls?
NAVEN Girls: Being fueled by the sun, an LA girl isn’t afraid to brighten up her life with the incorporation of color in her wardrobe such as Naven’s signature Pop Pink, Chartreuse and Vegas Blue. She leans towards an easy breezy daytime look like Naven’s Kimono and Maxi Skirt, perfect for a stroll along Venice Boardwalk, but loves to glam it up with Naven’s Skinny Mini Skirt or Party Dress, for a hot night in Hollywood with girlfriends.
Q : Does the city influence your designs at all?
NAVEN Girls: We design based on what we want in our “dream closet,” and since we have been living in LA for the past 10 years this city of dreams has definitely influenced our sense of style and the clothing we design.
Q: Your dresses have a very feminine cut: what are your tips on how a woman should dress to maximize her curves?
NAVEN Girls: One thing we pride ourselves on as far as the fit of Naven clothing, is that we make our clothing for real girls. It’s easy to make a skinny model look good in anything, but with curves you really need to understand the female body and silhouette. We encourage high-waisted fits to bring in the waist line, and angular tops with shoulder pads to broaden the shoulders. Knowing which bits to cover, and which to accentuate, gives maximum sexiness and flattery to everybody.
Q: What has been your favorite or bestselling piece and why?
NAVEN Girls: Our customers love cocktail dresses. On our best-selling dress list is the Party Dress, Bombshell and Heartthrob.

Q: Can you give us a sneak peak of what’s in store for your Holiday Collection?
NAVEN Girls: Sequins, cut outs and faux furs.

Q: What is your must-have beauty product?
NAVEN girls : Red Lipstick!

Kym & Lex
Stars

If you haven’t already heard any of Kym&Lex’s Songs, you now have to check out their latest recorded Song produced by Johnny Whatt.

The twins are well known for their amazing designs and success in the Fashion Industry but there’s a whole lot of more talent behind the Beautiful girls. “Stars” reminds of Ellie Goulding’s Starry Eyed ft. Katy Perry’s Alien Song but It’s still has a whole different vibe. It does have that urban feeling underneath mixed with Kymberley’s & Alexis’ expressive vocals which makes it fit as a dance song to a great party or a trendy Event. The sounds are all energetic and active. There’s a lot in the song especially when you put your headphones on & just really sink into it. The chorus contains the lyrical and melodic hook of the song which is so catchy that you just can’t get it out of your head the entire day. It’s fun and it shows the big potential of the upcoming Songs!
